Sales

Why a gecko? Well, I am Gecko, so you'd think I'd know the answer. It's actually quite simple: if a salesman in a suit told you that there was this great sale tommorrow, you'd say "oh really" and move on. He's probably out for a commission. But if a cute little gecko with a guitar on his back told you that there was great sale tommorrow, you'd believe him. Because I'm just that kind of gecko--someone you can talk to and believe. I'm not a person, so you don't have to worry about parental ratings or commissions or how much you'll get for your trade-in. I'll even entertain the kids while you're gone; I'll bet they love singing camp songs and roasting marshmallows.

Brothers

I have one brother—just a wee one. Few weeks old, that’s all. He’s already got a stubborn head, though. When the bugger spots a dragonfly or a beetle, he’ll hunt it all day. Just watches it, waiting. One time he followed this spider all the way around the pond and fell asleep on a sunny rock. My parents looked everywhere for him. Stayed up all night worrying if he was eaten by some bird or drowned. He came back eventually, but he got a real mean look—you know, the look that says “you’re dead, mister.” Says he’ll never go to school, but we all said that when we were young. And he’s bright, really bright, too; I wish I had his wits. When I left home, he was crying and wailing and begging me to stay and help him hunt bugs and teach him guitar. But I just said I’d be back eventually, and I’d share my treasure with him if he took care of mum and dad. I miss him a lot now. Even if he’s sometimes stupid and wanders off.

Have Pirates, Will Travel

Most people think that being a gecko is easy. They think we just soak up the sun, patter around, eating bugs and all. But it’s really not like that—not at all. At least for me it isn’t. You see, I never wanted to just be a gecko, but an explorer, a traveler. See the world. A traveling gecko, yeah, that’s a good life in my book. Having real adventures, not just a trip across the pond. I never really had a destination in mind; I just wanted to go someplace new and discover buried treasure or a forgotten tribe or a mysterious island with temples and swaggering pirates. Yeah—that’s what I want. So here I am, crossing this street, guitar on my back, a song in my head, and no X to mark the spot. I wonder if pirates like guitar.

First Name Basis

Why, of course I'm a gecko. What a silly question. If I asked you "are you a human?" I bet you'd laugh as well. It's simply absurd: here I am, green, big black eyes, spotted back, tail and all, and you stand there asking me if I'm a gecko. What else would I be? I'm certainly not a cat; I couldn't stand all that hair anyway. And I'm not a dog because I'm having a perfectly normal conversation with you. Have you ever met a dog that walked through downtown with his guitar looking for a spot of tea? Didn't think so. No, I'm an ordinary gecko, just looking to live a little, have a few good laughs, and maybe, just maybe, find some love along the way. I'm afraid I've got to be off now--have to get to the end of this street by nightfall--but I'll probably be seeing you shortly anyway. You can even call me Gecko, if you'd like.
